Stress Support Supplements
Stress support supplements commonly contain ingredients such as ashwagandha, magnesium, L-theanine, valerian, lemon balm or mixed botanical extracts. They are sold as capsules, tablets, gummies, powders and liquids, with significant differences in extract type, concentration and suggested serving.
Some ashwagandha preparations may help with perceived stress, but studies have often been small and have used different formulations. Ashwagandha may cause drowsiness or digestive effects, has been linked rarely to liver injury and should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding; it may also interact with thyroid, blood-pressure, diabetes, immune-suppressing, sedative and seizure medicines.
