Probiotic Supplements

Probiotic supplements provide live microorganisms in measured servings and may be sold as capsules, sachets, powders, drops, liquids, gummies or chewables. Their labels may show the number of colony-forming units, but products can differ substantially in strains, live counts, suggested duration and whether refrigeration is required.
Look for products that identify the genus, species and strain and state the live count through the expiry date rather than only at manufacture. More strains or a higher count are not automatically better, and there are no general official recommendations covering probiotic use by all healthy people. Professional advice is appropriate for persistent digestive symptoms, weakened immunity, serious illness or use in premature infants.
