Respiratory exercisers include incentive spirometers and inspiratory muscle-training devices that use a mouthpiece, moving piston, balls or another indicator to provide visual feedback during controlled breathing. Models may measure inhaled volume or airflow and can be supplied for postoperative recovery or professionally guided respiratory rehabilitation.
Use the device according to instructions from a doctor, physiotherapist or respiratory therapist, as the correct target and frequency depend on the individual. Incentive spirometry works best as part of a wider plan that can include deep breathing, directed coughing, pain control and movement; it should not be treated as a diagnostic tool or a replacement for medication. Stop and rest if dizziness occurs, and seek advice if breathing practice causes significant pain or difficulty.
