Tampons are single-use menstrual products worn internally to absorb menstrual flow. They are available in different absorbency levels, including light, regular and higher-absorbency options, and may come with cardboard, plastic or no applicator. Most are made from cotton, rayon or a blend of both materials.
Select the lowest absorbency that comfortably manages your flow and follow the manufacturer’s insertion instructions. Tampons should generally be changed every four to eight hours and never left in for longer than eight hours. Stop use and seek urgent medical help if sudden fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness or a sunburn-like rash develops, as these can be warning signs of toxic shock syndrome.
